On the eve of the New Year of 2019, and it's time to take stock of the year 2018 - both personal and socio-political. Basetop.ru traditionally publishes ratings that let you know place of Russia in the modern world.
True, they need to be taken with some skepticism. It is no secret that statistics are often the handmaids of politics.
199th place in university ranking
Where to go to study? The answer to this question is given by the British media Times Higher Education, and its approach is global - the best universities around the world, numbering over 1,250, are taken into account.
Universities were evaluated in 13 categories, including the quality of teaching, the volume of research work, its results and assessment by the scientific community, citation index, educational opportunities for students from other countries and so on.
The highest place is at Moscow State University (199), followed by MIPT (251) and the Higher School of Economics (350). A little pleased with the fact that another five Russian universities managed to enter the ranking, while the rest (except for Moscow State University, which fell by five places) improved their positions.
154th place in the global index of peace
The safest countries in the world have been identified by experts at the Peace Institute of the University of Sydney. External violence was taken into account:
- military conflicts;
- the costs of military operations and maintaining the war machine in operational condition;
- general level of militarization;
- number of refugees
as well as domestic violence:
- crime level;
- degree of civil liberties of the population;
- political system stability and other criteria.
According to this rating, Russia is in the top ten among 163 countries, ahead of only countries such as Congo, the Central African Republic, Afghanistan and unhappy Syria, which takes the last place.
110th place in terms of charity
The Gallup Institute annually collects data on more than 150 countries of the world and assesses their ability and desire to help those in need, both among their own population and beyond. The basis of the rating is an oral survey; randomly selected respondents were asked how often they donate money and / or work as volunteers in non-profit organizations.
Russians as a whole are not inclined to part with hard-earned money, which is why our country is in the lower third of the list. However, the residents of the Russian Federation are always ready to help strangers. According to 44% of the respondents, only on the eve of the survey did they help people they did not know. But the number of volunteers is falling - compared with last year, it decreased by 1%.
104th place in the ranking of the quality of roads
Everyone knows the saying about the two biggest troubles in Russia (there is a suspicion that these indicators are interrelated). As you can see, this opinion is shared by the experts of the World Economic Forum (however, what are the diverse interests of this organization!) - Russia takes a modest 104th place out of 140 participating countries in the rating of road surfaces. The overall rating of the country is 3.3, the maximum possible is 7.
True, it is a little consolation that not one country in the world scored 7 points; Singapore has a maximum score of 6.4. Overtake Russia, in addition to, of course, Western Europe, countries such as Namibia, Ecuador, Azerbaijan and Rwanda.
96th place in Russia in the welfare rating
According to the Legatum Institute, Russia is not particularly thriving. Its place is in the lower third of the list of 149 participating countries. This rating is trying to build a profile of the country and determine its place among others, according to nine criteria, each of which is worthy of its own separate study. This includes both the level of economic development and business indicators, as well as the ability of citizens to receive education, medical care, protection from the state, the ability to criticize the state itself, as well as the ecology that is now fashionable.
Although 96th place, frankly, is not encouraging, earlier it was even worse - since 2006 Russia has slowly but surely climbed up and has now improved its position by 12 points.
Best of all, the Russian Federation stands where the remnants of the Soviet system still exist - in the field of education. Here the country takes an honorable 22nd place. Health care slipped into the 90s, the economy and business look good - 63 and 60 places respectively. The worst thing, according to Western comrades, is the situation with the government in Russia (124th place), and personal freedom is generally a matter of seams, because the 143rd place hints that it is fraught with criticism of the existing system.
53rd place in the ranking of healthcare 2018
And then a working Bloomberg information agency took notice, because among their interests, including health care. To rank countries on this scale, agency experts used data compiled by the World Health Organization, UN agencies, and the World Bank.
Countries scored (and lost) points depending on how long their citizens live, how much the state allocates for medicine (adjusted for GDP), and how much the average resident has to spend to treat. However, not all countries deserve to be included in the ranking - only those countries with a lifespan of 70 years, a GDP per capita of at least 5,000 American dollars, and a population of 5 million or more were considered Bloomberg.
Russia is in the 53rd place in the ranking, having risen two positions compared to 2017 and yielding to its former brothers in the socialist camp - Kazakhstan and Belarus, but suddenly ahead of the United States. The average life expectancy in the country has increased to 71.2 years. Interestingly, Russia was honored to be included in the healthcare rating only in 2014. And earlier this was hindered by the low life expectancy of the population, which did not reach the cherished 70 years. The percentage of GDP allocated to medicine in Russia is still one of the lowest in the ranking - only 5.6%
52nd place in the global environmental rating
Compiled by experts from Yale University (USA), the Enviromental Performance Index estimates 180 countries according to 24 criteria, grouped into two categories - the environmental impact on the life and health of people living in the country and the vitality of ecosystems.
The criteria are very detailed - even a parameter such as, for example, the solids content in the air of cities and water quality is taken into account. In general, Russia’s results are not the worst. Fears are mainly caused by the uncontrolled use of natural resources, especially fishing. According to these indicators, Russia is at the bottom of the list.
49th place in the ranking of the happiest countries
How happy are the citizens of Russia? The happiness rating compiled by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network provides an answer to this question. To determine such elusive matter as happiness, direct surveys of the population in 156 countries were used, as well as more prosaic criteria, such as life expectancy, social benefits (health, education, etc.), the possibility for social elevators, both vertical and horizontal, level of corruption and so on.
It is best to live in Western Europe, especially the Scandinavian countries, and worst of all - in the center of Africa and in martial law Syria.
47th place in terms of Internet connection speed
The rating was compiled by M-Lab in conjunction with Google Open Source Research, Princeton University and New America’s Open Technology Institute. In addition to the speed of data exchange, countries were evaluated in terms of connection reliability and the level of support for providers.
According to experts, over the past year, the total speed of Internet connections around the world has increased by 23%, and the faster the Internet in a single country, the more likely it will be to add more speed in the future. Singapore comes first, followed by the Scandinavian countries, but Russia takes a modest 47th place out of 200 countries. And compared with last year, the situation with the Internet in the country has worsened - Russia has gone down 4 positions.
But in terms of the quality and stability of the Internet, our country is in 13th place.
43rd place in the Global Competitiveness Index
The 2018 Global Competitiveness Report was compiled by experts from the World Economic Forum. This is a non-profit organization where large financial bigwigs, as well as state leaders, prominent politicians, as well as media people in a cozy atmosphere discuss the “problems of the present” - whatever that means.
The index itself shows how effectively a country manages its own resources to ensure the welfare of its citizens. The assessment criteria include, in addition to economic, social indicators - health care, labor market opportunities, education and much more. 43rd place for Russia - rollback; a year ago, she was 38. However, this is a clear progress compared to the year 2005, when our country barely crawled to the 70th.
The recent banking scandals and the unstable situation with them have spoiled Russia's karma in the eyes of the World Economic Forum.
43rd place according to the human development index
Each year, one of the UN offices, bearing the big name “Development Program” publishes a report with the equally outstanding title “Report on the Development of Humanity”. The purpose of the report is to determine how exactly developed countries differ from developing countries.
Countries are evaluated by a variety of criteria, most of which relate to the social sphere:
- length of life;
- opportunities for medical care and education;
- general standard of living;
- the degree of equality between the sexes and nationalities and so on.
In general, Russia has good indicators. She is in the top 50 best countries for life, thanks in large part to the remnants of the Soviet system that still hold on: education, medicine, and the relative gender balance among workers. Over the years, Russia has been demonstrating a slow but steady growth of indicators - if in 2010 it was at 65th place, and in 2014 at 57th, then in 2016 it was already at 49th.
37th place in the ranking of billionaires
And sanctions are not an obstacle in the path of a purposeful person to his wealth. Although there is much to strive for - in the world ranking of billionaires annually published by the already mentioned Bloomberg agency, the Russian rich begin at 37th place. It's a shame for the power! And in the Robin Hood index of 2018 from the same Bloomberg, the Russian representative was in the top twenty at all.
However, the fact that our fellow citizens continue to grow rich and, as their foreign comrades studying their capital with natural interest, claim, is a little comforting to ordinary workers. If the Americans managed to increase their fortune by some miserable 7.5%, then the Russians - by as much as 11%. Crisis and sanctions? No, not heard.
31st place for business conditions
Doing Business 2018 is an index created by experts from the World Bank Group. This is an organization whose goal is to help developing countries. She does this, including making ratings, in which country it is easier to conduct business or “do business”. The rating is primarily based on numerous surveys; claim that they interviewed at least 12 thousand people in more than 190 countries, which, in fact, are engaged in entrepreneurship.
The received data is verified, sorted, and on their basis the world rating of the country is determined. Among the criteria include: the simplicity of creating your own business, the cost of setting up office space, electrification, real estate prices, the ease of obtaining a loan, bankruptcy procedures and much, much more.
Russia in this rating looks very good. But only seven years ago she occupied 124th place, but when the head of state expressed concern about this circumstance, she began a rapid ascent. It is interesting that one of the largest jerks - almost 20 places up - the country is obliged to simplify the procedure for electrification of storage facilities.
25th place in Russia in the ranking of innovations
We examined the situation with business, but how are things with innovations? According to Bloomberg, whose specialization is the collection and trading of information, the overall situation is not bad. Countries were evaluated according to several criteria - the number and quality of research (both in the field of high science and in engineering), the availability of high technologies and their prevalence, as well as the promotion of this state.
Russia’s affairs in this area are doing well, although somewhat worse than before. The country showed the best result exactly on the eve of the 2014 crisis - then Russia was in 14th place among more than two hundred countries.
2nd place in the armament ranking 2018
According to the precepts of Tsar Alexander III, who believed that Russia has only two friends - its army and navy, the modern Russian state continues to nourish and support its friends. And he does it with success - according to Global Firepower experts, it is second only to the US Army.
The rating in the ranking of the world's strongest armies was carried out on the basis of 55 criteria, and, according to the compilers, you simply won’t take the first places in the rating - the formula used in calculating the points successfully allows small but well-organized countries from the military point of view to successfully compete with multimillion giants. Moreover, in addition to the number of people, ships, planes and tanks, such parameters as the country's economic situation were also taken into account. In general, Russia has something to be proud of - for now: China is already stepping on its heels.
