What is ELO?
The system for evaluating the conditional “strength” of the participants in the competition (both individually and as a team) was invented by the Hungarian chess player and part-time scientist Arpad Elo.
- If you greatly simplify, then when you win, the player adds points, and when you lose, they are taken away. And if there is a tie, they are deducted from both opponents.
- The number of points added / taken away depends on the rating of the opponent and on the probable outcome of the competition.
- For example, if an adversary belongs to the highest league and a newcomer to the lower league, then the system assumes the victory of the former with a probability of 99%. And if a rookie suddenly wins, then he will get a lot of points. And if enough points accumulate, then the player moves to the next rank, where other factors are already used when calculating points.
For football, a special Elo system modified for the football specifics is used. It takes into account all matches of class “A”, the results of which are available to everyone, and the final verdict is issued after wagering 30 matches.
The system also takes into account many nuances, for example, the previous team rating, the importance of the competition, the number of goals and, of course, the result.
