Since the early 1990s, Hollywood has begun adapting video games to the big screen. And, at least on paper, this seems like a snap. The film just needs to follow the plot and characters already created in the game, allowing some liberties for the sake of greater entertainment or because of the meager budget. But, like in many movie-based games, the adaptation of video games to films has had mixed results. We present you the top 10 worst films created based on games. They were selected by critics of Vulture, one of the New York Magazine websites.
10. Resident Evil 4: Life After Death (2010)
Although the Resident Evil series was ambiguously received by critics and is not a fully reliable adaptation of the games of the same name, it was a commercial success, giving the audience a lot of action, adventure and Milla Jovovich. But by the 4th part, the franchise is already "exhausted." Even the appearance of the beautiful Eli Larter, the charismatic Executioner and a good soundtrack was not enough to remove the status of the least interesting Resident Evil Movie from the film. The script has a lot of “gag”, a lot of drawn out scenes, but few interesting dialogues and logic of what is happening.
9. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009)
The character of Chun-Li is in the original “Street Fighter”, and it would seem great that Hollywood decided to devote a whole film to this beautiful girl.
However, the picture became one of the legendary failures in the history of cinema. Kristin Kroyk, playing Chun-Lee, could not win the hearts of the audience, she did not want to empathize. The advantage of the film was that the fights in it were shot beautifully and spectacularly. But there were few special effects and the characters did not resemble their game versions. If you remove the word "street fighter" from the name, then many will not guess that the movie was shot based on the motives of this game.
8. Mortal Kombat 2: Extermination (1997)
Following the commercial success of the first Mortal Kombat, sequel was inevitable. However, in the second part of the film, none of the creators wanted to ask where the thread of the narrative reached. In the sequel, there is Robin Shu as the great Liu Keng, but there is no Christopher Lambert, who brought something special to the role of Lord Ryden.
The plot of the second "Mortal Kombat" is not very similar to the plot of the third part of the game, and instead the audience is given battles. A lot of fights, as many fights as possible, plus a wide variety of characters. Unfortunately, they appear for a short time, and do not have time to sink into the soul. And while the first “Mortal Kombat” was one of the best films based on the video game, the second became one of the worst, upsetting not only critics, but also fans of Mortal Kombat.
7. Squadron commander (1999)
The screen version of the popular space simulator Wing Commander about the confrontation between humanity and the cat-like race of kilrati was to be successful. Not only extras were invited to shoot, but famous personalities such as Matthew Lillard, Saffron Burroughs, Freddy Prince Jr. and Cheki Cario. And the plot was not changed as much as in other films that fell into the selection of the worst adaptations of computer games. However, the weak acting, transient and not large-scale space battles, and implausible special effects turned the fantastic "sweetie" into something indigestible.
6. Warcraft (2016)
Poor Warcraft. He tried very hard to make fans of the most popular online games happy. But, despite the time spent on shooting and a large budget, the result was "booed" by American viewers.
According to critics, the creators of the movie "Warcraft" fell into one of the biggest movie traps. They spent too much resources on a project that was not supposed to exist initially. Nobody needs the super-exciting world of World of Warcraft on the big screen, because you can easily enjoy it just by creating an account in this game.
But at least the blockbuster about the battle of people and orcs in the open spaces of Azeroth turned out to be very popular in Russia. On Kinopoisk, he scored an impressive rating of 7.6 points, while on IMDb - 6.90 points.
5. Need for Speed: Thirst for Speed (2014)
Despite the fact that the film was played by famous actors - Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper and even Michael Keaton, he came out too boring. Most of what Need for Speed might entice is already in the various Fast and the Furious series. Numerous chases, expensive cars and lots of special effects - all this is good. However, when viewing “Need for Speed”, the feeling that all this had already happened somewhere did not leave. What should be the impression of a film made on one of the most popular computer games?
4. Alone in the dark (2005)
This film was shot by the famous (in a bad sense of the word) director Uwe Boll. And he really excelled in casting actors for Alone in the Dark. As one of the viewers put it in the recall, “it feels like the actors were taken on the street.” Only leading actor Christian Slater is still trying to match his computer "original" - detective Edward Carnby, who is investigating the cause of the death of his friend.
There is practically no logic in the film, directing is terrible, special effects are cheap. Do not waste time on this cinematic nightmare, it is better to play one of the games in the Alone in the Dark series.
3. Assassin's Creed (2016)
The basis of this film was the original script, which was written specifically for the filming and did not repeat the storyline of the games. If this is not enough for the killer “Assassin's Creed” action movie to enter the top 3 worst movie adaptations of computer games, here are some more reasons for you.
- Most of the time, the audience does not watch the assassin Aguilar, but his distant descendant, Callum Lynch. It's boring.
- Quickly changing camera angles make your eyes tired, and during fights it’s really not clear who is chasing anyone and who is fighting with whom.
- The soundtrack is not remembered, as well as the game of most actors.
- There is no atmosphere of mysticism and mystery that was in the game.
As a result, against the background of any part of Assassin’s Creed, the film looks like a weak craft.
2. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)
The young prince of Dastan was played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina played characters named Nizam and Sheikh Amar, respectively. The casting of these three men, simply spilled Persians, and the fact that the plot of the film is an almost complete “gag” of scriptwriters ensured “Prince of Persia” second place in the list of the worst video game adaptations. But Dastan could play Hrithik Roshan - one of the most beautiful men in the world.
With all the flaws of the picture, the audience kindly recalls the acting game, as well as soundly made fights, good scenery and humor.
1. Fasted (2007)
Here it is, a film that should make you think that “Prince of Persia” is a work of art. “Fasted” is a trash story in which, at the behest of Uwe Boll, toys, terrorists, hippies and the unlucky Dude (Zach Ward) mixed up in the town of Paradise with a blood bath.
Ball, scoffing at George W. Bush, Osama bin Laden, making abusive jokes about September 11, made a picture that does not repeat the plot of the game. Instead, it conveys the atmosphere of chaos and destruction inherent in the Postal series. In general, "Fasted" is a movie from the category of "so crazy that even good."
